Ok let’s talk about Janelle Monae – a powerhouse woman, musician and social voice. From her militant defense of #blacklivesmatter issues to her stance on wearing black and white, she is a role model for young women everywhere. She gets it, i.e. what it is to truly love yourself and let your uniqueness shine through.

One of my favorite quotes from her is

People don’t ask Jay Z to take his shirt off when he rhymes. Showing my skin is not what makes me sexy…It was up to me to show people and young girls there was another way.

And it’s so true.

Janelle Monae has been dubbed as the “Dapper Queen” and one of the greatest role models for young women today because of her modest style. The consistent black and white color palette she wears, and also calls her uniform, is a symbol of class and a tribute to her past. The coolest thing about it, in my opinion, is that it’s intentional. She is doing it on purpose and she makes no apology for that choice.

The very fact that she has such an impact without showing her skin like other celebrities, has redefined what being a woman looks like in this day and age. No doubt she’s leaving a legacy – one I hope my future kids find useful because, dare I say, we need more women like her – women who are willing to embrace their femininity and sexuality with unapologetic confidence.

Today, in an effort to join Janelle in her style statement, I’m rocking black and white with a pop of red.
